Nicosia, Cyprus
This international competition, sponsored by the Cyprus Theater Organization, was for the new state theater in Nicosia, and for which the firm received a first honorable mention.
The triangular site mandated by the competition brief is part of the master plan for a new cultural center for Nicosia, the Cypriot capital. It is to remain an open public plaza. This entry retains artifacts and the imprint of its previous use, the historic GSP stadium.
The undulating steel triangulated canopies enclose a 700-seat proscenium theater and a 150-seat black box experimental performance space. A sequence of elevated podiums accommodates public foyers, exhibition spaces and dining facilities that open out on to the proposed plaza.
