Department of Architecture Gallery
Ledra Street Building
Nicosia, Cyprus

Eleven proposals for an important urban site in Nicosia, the capital of the Republic of Cyprus, will be the subject of an exhibit and roundtable discussion on September 27th at the Department of Architecture of the University of Cyprus. The student proposals, “Cultural Infrastructure as Urban Gateway”, were developed within the context of their Fall 2009 Undergraduate Design Studio taught by Theoharis David FAIA, Professor. Two of the Pratt students are being flown to Cyprus as guests of the University of Cyprus, with which Pratt Institute has a cooperation agreement, to present the work of their classmates and to take part in the discussions which will include members of the architecture faculty, municipal and government officials and prominent local architects along with invited guest Xavier Costa, former head of the Metropolis Program, Barcelona and Fondacion  Mies van der Rohe  curator, and now  Dean of the College  of Arts Media and Design of Northeastern University, Boston.

The highly debated and publicized site, subject of the student proposals, is the location of the old historic GSP stadium, and is adjacent to or in close proximity not only the historic Venetian built walls of Nicosia, but major projects under development by significant architects such as KPF London, Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Zaha Hadid, and Hopkins Architects, London.

The exhibit and discussion will also include the proposals of University of Cyprus Department of Architecture students for the same site, and will consist of computer renderings, drawings and models.

There will be a catalogue available in print and on line.
