This project, which received an Honorable Mention, is the result of an open competition for a new passenger ship terminal in the Mediterranean port city of Limassol, Cyprus.
The idea was to create a clearly delineated and iconic profile visible from land and sea that rises out of the horizontality of the existing condition. This profile is achieved by a dynamic stainless steel clad cantilevered canopy with horizontal glands opening north that allow for natural cooling and controlled natural light.
The bi-level structure separates arrivals and departures and accommodates RO/RO facilities and extensive protected parking for passenger automobiles. It also incorporates under the roof canopy a public promenade deck for dining that overlooks harbor activity and the open sea.
The concept responds to the architecture of the mobile cranes, the containers, and the ships to create a new kind of urban landscape as an extension of the city of which the port is a vital part.
